Heritage Heads Up – Oct 2018

Hello Heritage Roadrunners & Families,

It is already October! As usual, we have much going on here at school. Our teachers have worked hard to create high expectations and establish classroom routines that facilitate safety and learning. We’re focusing on helping each child learn and grow in a supportive environment. Our classroom teachers at Heritage are exceptional! I sincerely enjoy working with each of them and I know that they are working extremely hard to challenge and support each of your children.

I have a few items that I want to share with each of you.

  1. White Ribbon Week ~ Going on now! Each day this week we’ve been learning and discussing how important it is to use technology appropriately. The overall theme is: Let’s Get Real! One of the main topics has been valuing real relationships over virtual ones. Additionally, we’ve focused on spending time with family and friends on activities that don’t involve a screen. Don’t forget to send pictures and videos of your families giving priority to real life relationships to Mrs. Olmstead.

  4. Last Friday we sent each student home with a Heritage Elementary t-shirt – THANK YOU PTA!! Please have your student show their school spirit and wear their school shirt each Friday. (If your student was absent or didn’t receive a shirt please contact our office and we will provide one for them)
  5. Halloween Parade Info – New this year, classroom parties and our traditional costume parade will be in the afternoon. The parade will begin at approximately 2:45pm. Parents and family can best enjoy the parade from the rear playground area! The Halloween costume parade should be done at approximately 3:15pm. More information regarding Halloween activities will be shared closer to the holiday.

Operation School Bell Information:

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Operation School Bell is a program that gives families shopping vouchers for new shoes and clothes from Walmart. It is funded by the Southern Utah Assistance League. This is ONLY for students at Heritage Elementary who NEED new shoes and clothes. The shopping event will be October 23 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m at the Bloomington WalmartStudents will bring home the vouchers when it gets closer to October 23 and must take the vouchers to the shopping event.

Lunch Information – Sept 2018

Important Lunch Information

Meal Pricing: 

LUNCH Full pay: $2.20/ per day, Reduced: 40 cents/per day

BREAKFAST Full pay: $1.75/per day, Reduced: 30 cents/per day

MILK: 50 cents/per milk

Payment for student meals can be made on-line with a credit card using PayPams ( or in the office with cash or check.

**For those receiving free meals, the cost of milk is only covered in a complete meal. If your student takes a single milk, there is a $0.50 charge. **

Meal Benefits: ( Meal benefits must be applied for each year. Applications can be filled out on-line or in our office. If your child was receiving meal benefits last school year, there is a 30 day grace period.  This allows your child to continue with the same benefits until the new application is completed and processed. After the grace period, if you have not yet applied or have not been approved through the district office, your child will return to a full pay status. Please note that it can take applications 10 days to get processed. The deadline for completing the free/reduced lunch application is SEPTEMBER 21st!

Important Info (Sept 4, 2018)

Roadrunner Parents,

As you know this past week we had our first SEP conferences. I greatly appreciate all who were able to come and learn from their child’s classroom teacher about expectations and what their student can expect throughout the school year. Mr. Orchard and myself also presented regarding general school expectations. If you missed out on the general session you can check out the presentation (CLICK HERE). Two highlights: #1 Attendance = on time ALL day every day and #2 Parking Lot Safety – one goal = safety. If you have additional questions or suggestions, please contact me directly. 

Our School Community Council election is currently open. Please contact me directly if you are willing and able to serve on our community council. Additional information can be found on the SCC webpage or by clicking on the notice (ENGLISH  |  SPANISH). Our first meeting will be held on September 10 at 3pm in our Conference Room.

August SEP Conferences

Heritage Parents,

I want to thank you for helping get the school year off to a great start. It was been wonderful to be back in school with your children. One of the best parts of working at a school is definitely the students. Our Heritage students are fun, engaging, and so unpredictable that each and every day is a new adventure.

I have two important items to share with you:

  1. Monday, August 27 – PLC Collaboration Day – Our school will follow our Friday early release schedule and dismiss at 1:15pm for grades 1-5. Kindergarten will also follow the Friday schedule, AM = 9:00 to 10:40 and PM = 11:30 to 1:15. There are five of these days scheduled throughout the school year (Aug 27, Sept 24, Oct 29, Dec 10, March 25). These days are scheduled to help facilitate teacher professional growth. Our teachers will spend the time studying and preparing to be more effective in working with your students.
  2. SEP Conferences, August 29 & 30 – Our first SEP conference time will be a chance for parents (Heritage students and other children need not attend this SEP Conference) to come to school and attend one information session by the classroom teacher and one general session in the gym. Classroom Teachers will present on each hour at 4, 5, 6 for approximately 20 minutes. The general session in the gym will be repeated at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 with Mr. Baker and Mr. Orchard discussing Title I, attendance expectations, PTA, parking lot safety, general Q&A, etc. Please attend the session times that are most convenient for you. These sessions will be most beneficial in answering any question you may have regarding your student’s experience at Heritage Elementary this school year.

Thank you for your patience as we work on our school bus schedules and other transportation issues. Our entire school staff care deeply about your children and we are dedicated to providing the best educational experience possible.

Padres de Heritage,

Quiero agradecerles por ayudarnos a empezar el año escolar de una forma maravillosa. Estamos encantados de estar de nuevo en la escuela con sus niños. Definitivamente una de las mejores cosas de trabajar en la escuela es compartir con los estudiantes. Los estudiantes de Heritage son divertidos, comprometidos y tan impredecibles que convierten cada día en una nueva aventura.

Tengo dos cosas muy importantes que compartir con Ustedes:

  1. Lunes 27 de agosto – PLC Día de Colaboracion – Este día la escuela seguirá los horarios de un viernes, los grados de 1ro a 5to saldrán a la 1:15 pm. Los niños de Jardín también tendrán el horario de un viernes, clase de la mañana de 9:00 a 10:40, clase de la tarde de 11:30 a 1:15. Durante el año escolar habra cinco de estos dias de colaboracion (agosto 27, septiembre 24, octubre 29, diciembre 10, marzo 25).  Estos dias están dedicados a facilitar el crecimiento profesional de los maestros. En estos dias los maestros la pasaran estudiando y preparando para ser más efectivos en el trabajo con los estudiantes.
  2. Conferencia de Padres y Maestros (SEP) agosto 29 & 30 – Nuestra primera conferencia de padres y maestros será una oportunidad para los padres (los estudiantes y cualquier otro niño no necesitan asistir a esta primera conferencia) de concurrir a la escuela y atender a una unica reunión informativa, se llevará a cabo en la clase de su niño y después una reunión general en el gimnasio de la escuela. Cada maestro presentara en la clase por 20 minutos empezando a las 4 después a las 5 y por último a las 6. La reunión en el gym será a las 4:30, 5:30 y 6:30 con el director de la escuela el señor Baker y con el señor Orchard. Ellos informaran sobre Titulo 1, asistencia a la escuela, PTA, el estacionamiento y preguntas en general que los padres pudieran tener. Por favor no deje de asistir a las reuniones en el horario que mejor le convenga. Estas reuniones serán muy beneficiosas para responder cualquier pregunta sobre las experiencias de los estudiantes en Heritage Elementary.

Gracias por su paciencia mientras trabajamos en los horarios del bus y otros problemitas del transporte. Todo el personal de Heritage está muy involucrado en lograr el bienestar de todos los alumnos de la escuela y proveer la mejor experiencia educativa.

Fantastic Start!!!

Heritage Roadrunner Parents & Students,

We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year. Our amazing teachers and staff have worked extremely hard to make the school the best it can be for our students. The classrooms that I’ve visited are fun and engaging and our students appear genuinely happy to be back at school. (Hopefully, each of you parents are happy to have your students back at Heritage as well!)

I’ve got a few items to share that will help us all make 2018-19 a great school year for you and your student.

  1. Attendance: On time all day attendance is so important. The school day starts at 8:55 with a late bell at 9:00am. Our teachers work extremely hard to have meaningful activities right at the beginning of the day. Staying at school through the entire day is also very important to remember. Don’t regularly check out your student early! Attendance = On time, ALL day, everyday!
  2.  Daily Reading: I expect that every student would practice reading at home each and every day. This is the best way to improve!
  3. Parking Lot Safety: Let’s work together to ensure that our drop off and pick up are safe for everyone! Drive slow, be extra cautious and aware (No Phone Zone), pull forward, only get out of your car if you are parked in a stall. Thanks for your patience as we ensure the safety of everyone!
  4. Communication: Our school website is constantly updated, our teachers send home weekly newsletters, emails and phone calls will be used to communicate with parents. We want you to know what is going on here at Heritage, please stay in the loop and support our school.

Thanks for your support of our school. We have the best students, teachers, and parents. I know that every student at Heritage will grow academically and have a great experience at school this year if we work together!

2018 Summer Information

Heritage Roadrunners and Families,

It has been a fantastic school year! We’ve learned tons, laughed together, and maybe even shed a few tears throughout the year. It has definitely been one to remember.

Information Items:

  1. Your student (grades 1-4) will receive a letter with information regarding next school year, including important dates to remember as well as your child’s teacher for next school year. If your student is not at school when we dismiss today, then letter will be mailed home. 
  2. Secretaries and office staff will be in the office thru June 1. Our office will again be open beginning in August.
  3. Summer Lunch Program begins June 4 (Summer Lunch Information)
  4. Our school website ( will have the most detailed and current information regarding all things Heritage.

Finally, thank you to each of you and especially your students. We all contribute to the success of Heritage and I’m extremely happy to be able to work with your amazing children!

It’s the Final Countdown …

Heritage Roadrunner Students and Parents!

I just wanted to send a quick note to give you a few reminders and a rundown of the final week of school.

Reminder #1 – Purchase your Yearbook NOW! $10 in the office.

Reminder #2 – Please make sure you have paid all lunch balances, library fines, and turned in take home library books.

Reminder #3 – No OEK this week, final day of Kindergarten is Wednesday, May 23

Reminder #4 – Wednesday, May 23 is an early release schedule, dismiss at 1:15

Reminder #5 – Thursday, May 24 Last Day of School, dismiss at 12:00

Tomorrow (Tue. May 22) we are excited to have our first ever DHS Graduate Honorary Roadrunner Rally – we’ve invited the graduating seniors who attended Heritage or have siblings at Heritage to come and let us cheer them on as they will be graduating from high school this year. I hope that this will become an annual tradition where we celebrate the graduating seniors while helping our students see how important school is help them set a goal to graduate from High School themselves.

  • 9:20 – Awards Assembly & Reading Reward – Pie the Principals

Thank you for a great school year. It is so much fun to review results and see how much progress our students have made. It has been a wonderful school year with much to celebrate. May Day!

Heritage Students and Families,

Can you believe it is May!? This school year continues to zoom on by, so hang on tight as we sprint to the finish!

First of all, Thank you for being more careful and cautious in our parking lot as you drop off and pick up your students. Please remember that student safety is the #1 concern. I want to again remind each of you that students should only be dropped off or picked up from the curb, never from the lane of traffic, please pull forward and be aware of other cars and traffic. Also, thanks for putting away your phones so you can be more alert and attentive as you are driving in our parking lot.

Next a reminder about attendance! Even though things seem to be winding down here at school, I strongly encourage on time – all day attendance. Each teacher here at Heritage has worked hard to plan and prepare for each day. Remember that the first bell rings at 8:55 am and the late bell rings at 9:oo am. Students should be in their seat ready to learn by 9. The school day doesn’t end until 3:30 pm and students should be here the entire school day as much as possible. Please also do your best to take care of after school travel arrangements prior to the school day as well. At times it is near impossible for our office staff to get messages to so many students.

Finally a request, as part of participating in the Leader in Me as a school, we desire your feedback regarding areas of strength and areas where we can improve. Please take a few minutes and complete the survey online @

Thanks for your continued support of Heritage Elementary. It was very enjoyable this past week as we celebrated our teachers. They deserve our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude, they work extremely hard to provide a wonderful learning environment for each of our students.

Parking Lot Safety

Roadrunner Parents,

Student safety is a primary concern. I’ve got a few reminders for each of you to consider as you drop off or pick up your student(s). Please take a few minutes and watch the video below!

Parking Lot Safety Guidelines:

  1. Students may only enter car in designated pick up zone or designated parking area
  2. Never leave your car unattended in pick up zone
  3. Never double park in pick up zone, thru traffic lane must remain open
  4. Park in designated parking stalls if you intend to leave your vehicle
  5. Never encourage your student to run through traffic to your car
  6. Do not drive distracted – Put your cell phone away!
  7. Drive slowly and cautiously in our parking lot and pick up areas

Please be extra careful and cautious here at school! We have over 600 students in preschool thru 5th grade and we want each one to arrive at school safely each day and to return home safely as well!

2018 End of Year Testing – Let’s do our BEST!!!

Dear Parents & Students,

Our students at Heritage have had an amazing year of learning. To measure growth and celebrate our learning throughout this year we are now participating in our end of year testing. This includes a final DIBELS benchmark with all our students, as well as SAGE testing with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Our end of year assessments are simply one measure of our learning from the school year. These tests are important and I would ask that each student take their time and do their very best. Parents, you can help out by also encouraging your child to take their time and to give their best effort!

Suggestions to prepare for test day:

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Eat a nutritious breakfast
  • Set out clothes and backpack, prepare lunch (etc.) the night before in order to have a calm morning
  • Dress comfortably
  • On Time ALL Day attendance, our testing sessions typically start first thing

Your children are well on their way to becoming lifelong learners and have worked so hard this year. I am very proud of each and everyone of them and their individual growth. Thanks for the great year!
