Ghosts, ghouls, monsters, witches, superheros, TMNTs, and even a few Disney Princesses(especially ones from Frozen) roamed our halls at Heritage! Happy Halloween!!!
Today our school participated in a "Lockdown" drill with our students, faculty, and staff. Parents and guardians, please take the opportunity to visit with your child about the drill. Each classroom was under lockdown for approximately 15 minutes. Classroom teachers, students, and our staff handled the drill extremely well. As we practice drills our goal is to give students and staff an opportunity to practice safety procedures. Additionally, we want to learn and determine areas where we can improve our practices.
For your information, during a lockdown the classroom teacher should do the following:
- Immediately clear the hallway and bathrooms by your room moving everyone into the classroom. Close your locked classroom door.
- Gather students and visitors to an interior block wall out of sight and turn out lights.
- Keep all persons away from the doors and windows to limit visibility.
- If possible, barricade door, and pull window shades.
- Ignore all bells and alarms
- Allow no one in or out of the classroom until a uniformed policeman opens the door
- REMAIN QUIET!!
- Account for students and when safe to do so relay the information to office.
Our lockdown was facilitated with the help of our school resource officer, who is a full time St. George Police Officer. He oversaw the drill and gave our school safety team valuable feedback. We appreciate working directly with the St. George Police Department to make our school as safe as possible!

Our PTA Spell-a-thon Fundraiser is happening NOW! Students will receive their packet of information including their spelling list. Please help your child collect pledges, study their words, and be prepared to get 100% on their spelling test on Oct. 10. Once they have their results please help them follow up with their pledges and get the money they collect back to the school.

Today there were a number of local schools placed on lockout because of a bank robbery. Our school, Heritage Elementary, worked directly with St. George City police in order to keep our students as safe as possible. The suspect immediately left the area and headed to the Washington Fields area. St. George Police determined to not place Heritage Elementary on lockout because the suspect left the area. The School Resource Office was at Heritage Elementary monitoring the situation. We are fortunate to have the support of our local law enforcement officers and will continue to work directly with them in emergency situations. Student safety will always be our top priority and we will work directly with local law enforcement to make sure that we are doing all we can to provide a safe learning environment!

The schools effected today were placed on LOCKOUT, this means:
Definition: To rapidly increase the level of security in the facility. Exterior doors and main interior doors are locked to make it more difficult for an intruder or a dangerous person to gain access to staff and students who can then continue productive activities, in a limited fashion.
Alert Signal: Announcement—“Lockout! Secure the Perimeter.”
- Immediately move students from outside into the building
- If you are located in an area with a lockable door, gather students in the vicinity into the room and close your locked door. Classroom doors should already be locked.
- Account for students with Red and Green Cards by placing them under the door or in the window, or report your status to the administrator or designee by e-mail, phone, or intercom as directed.
- Continue with normal activities as much as the situation allows.
- If students or staff must move about in the building, first obtain permission from the administrator or designee.
- Be prepared to rapidly implement an Evacuation or Lockdown if directed to do so.
- To maintain security, all outside doors, with the exception of the school’s front doors, should be kept locked at all times.
Recently I’ve noticed that some of our students are arriving at school in clothing that does not always match our District Dress Code Policy. Please review the guidelines listed below. The intent of this policy is to help ensure that our school is a safe and comfortable place to learn for all of our students. As your student leaves for school each day you might ask yourself, “Is there anything about what my student is wearing that would distract them (or other students) from being able to learn today?” If you determine that there is something amiss, please help it get corrected before you send them to school.

Washington County Dress Policy purpose is intended to promote a standard of modesty and grooming among our youth. Students are expected to support the dress and grooming standards; any students not in compliance with the dress code will be asked to change into appropriate clothing or footwear. The following are specific dress and grooming standards:
- Attire and grooming should be neat, clean, and safe.
- Hair color should be within the spectrum of color that hair grows naturally.
- Avoid apparel that is so extreme as to interrupt or adversely affect the educational process or prevent participation in physical activities.
- Printed apparel must be in good taste – no profanity, no suggestive slogans, no gang messages, or anything that suggests or promotes illegal substances will be tolerated.
- Hats may not be worn in the building except on specially designated days.
- Clothes that are mutilated or immodest are not appropriate school wear.
- Dresses, shorts, skirts, shirts, and blouses should be modest in length and not revealing. (Tank tops, tube tops and garments that reveal undergarments should not be worn).
- Only shorts and skirts of modest length may be worn.
- Tops must be worn at all times. Abbreviated clothing, tank tops, belly shirts, muscle shirts or ripped clothing are not appropriate for school.
- Apparel should be worn with appropriate undergarments and suitable footwear. Flip-flops are not appropriate footwear for PE classes. (Heritage Elementary has PE on THURSDAYS)

Quick reminder that we have our first SEP conferences of the year. This is such a great opportunity for all of our students, parents, and teachers to really lay the groundwork for an amazing school year! These conferences are the perfect time to set goals and expectations for the year. Students feel more accountable when they know their parent is involved. Parents can learn exactly what help their child’s teacher needs.
