2016-17 Class lists & Parent Input

Although it is still too early to be too concerned about class assignments for next year, I do want to help everyone understand the process we use to put together fair, equitable, and compatible classes. In the coming weeks, I will ask teachers to work in grade-level teams and put together class lists for the upcoming year. I will ask teachers to:

  • Divide students in a fair and equitable way (boys/girls, academic ability, behavior, language needs, etc.)
  • Put students together who need to be together.
  • Split up students who shouldn’t be together.
  • Try to put students with a teacher who would be the best fit for each class.

As you can imagine, meeting all of these goals is difficult. Our teachers have a unique perspective as the only individuals who see the students interact with their peers all day, 180 days of the year. Additionally, the professional learning community structure we use at Heritage helps guarantee the curriculum experience in whichever classroom students find themselves.

I sincerely hope parents will trust us to put classes together for next year in the best way possible. It’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly, and we carry it out with the best interest of each child at heart. We have an extraordinary teacher in each classroom, and I feel very confident our school-wide structures will provide a guaranteed and viable curriculum in each class.

From now until April 22 the “Parent Input Form” will be available in our office. Please stop by the office and pick one up if you so desire. The form allows parental input to be considered in the process of class placement for the upcoming school year. The bottom line is this, your child’s current classroom teacher will work to place each child in the best situation possible, your input will be considered and used to make the best class placement decision possible for each child.

Please contact me directly with questions or concerns!

End of Year Testing – Let’s Do Our BEST!!!

Our students at Heritage have had an amazing year of learning. To measure growth and celebrate our learning throughout this year we will soon be participating in our end of year testing. This includes a final DIBELS benchmark with all our students, as well as SAGE testing with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. I like to look at our end of year assessments as a celebration of our learning this year! These tests are important and I would ask that each student take their time and do their very best. Parents, you can help out by also encouraging your child to do their very best and helping with the suggestions below!

Suggestions to prepare for test day:

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Eat a nutritious breakfast
  • Set clothes, backpack, etc. out the night before in order to have a calm morning
  • Dress comfortably, layering clothing
  • Be on time for school, testing sessions start right after the bell and morning announcements

Your children are well on their way to becoming lifelong learners and have worked so hard this year. I am very proud of each and everyone of them and their individual growth. Thanks for the great year!

CLICK HERE for more information regarding the SAGE assessment.

Please stop by and visit if you have any questions or concerns regarding our end of year assessments or anything else happening here at Heritage!

Leader in Me Symposium ~ Success!!!

Our students and staff were amazing this week as we hosted visitors from near and far as part of the Leader in Me Symposium. Heritage Elementary is a special place and it was fun to share our greatness with others. Our school was heavily involved in everything from having students welcome attendees, to having a student give the opening speech welcoming the guests to beautiful St. George! Below are a few pictures that captured the excitement!

Additionally, there was a nice article in the Spectrum that also documented the happenings! See the article by clicking the following link: TLIM Spectrum Article

“Opt In” to receive Text Message Updates!

Heritage Parents,

I hope that this finds you well! I’m excited to reach out to you today in an effort to improve school to home communication. Our district has worked hard to create solutions to enable schools to effectively communicate with our parents. One of these tools is SchoolMessenger. It has the ability to send email, phone calls, and text messages. Recently in a survey response our parents overwhelmingly preferred to receive school updates via text message. Last Friday I attempted to send out a text to our families via SchoolMessenger reminding them of the Monday holiday. Out of nearly 600 students only 174 received the text message. Some of the numbers we have are not correct and other numbers have not opted in, therefore our text message is blocked.

I need your help. Below are the instructions to “opt in” to receive our text messages. In addition to opting in, PLEASE log into Powerschool and make sure that your contact information is current.

It is critical that we have correct contact information. This is the best way we have to notify you in case of emergency.

Please make the time to both opt in and keep your information current via Powerschool. Please call or stop by the office if you need any help!

To improve communication with parents, guardians and students, Washington County School District Technology expanded its ability to deliver phone, email, and SMS text messages using SchoolMessenger. SchoolMessenger will be used to communicate in emergency situations as well as inform parents of day to day progress and school events.

We invite you to fully participate in the process by opting in to SMS Text messaging and keeping contact information in PowerSchool up to date. Just complete two simple steps:

  1. Opt in to SMS Messaging by sending the word “Yes”, via text message, to the number 68453. SchoolMessenger will only send text messages to cell phone numbers whose recipients have agreed to receive them.
  2. Make sure you contact information is up to date by logging in to your PowerSchool Account and accessing the Demographics Change Page.

2016 A Great New Year!

Welcome Back Heritage Roadrunners!

We are excited to start 2016 here at Heritage and hope we can continue our amazing school year! I just want to send a few reminders so that we can all continue to excel!

#1 – On Time ALL Day Attendance! – Let’s all work together to make sure that our students have every opportunity to be successful each day. I’ve noticed that we have a large number of students arriving late or being checked out early each day. Being at school on time and staying all day sets students up for the best chance of success! Our teachers work extremely hard to make each moment of the day matter, when students miss they suffer academically. So let’s strive to be on time and stay the entire day!

#2 – TOYS/Hoverboards/Electronics/Etc – My plea with each student and our Heritage families is to keep ALL toys at home so that they are not lost, broken, or stolen here at school. Each teacher has playground equipment that should be able to keep our students busy and actively playing during their recess and free time here at school. Keep the extra stuff at home so that you can continue to enjoy it there!

#3 – Dress for the Weather – fortunately we live in a beautiful place where t-shirts and shorts can usually be enough. However, we may have a few days where more is required to keep our kids warm and ready to learn. **Side Note – please check the Lost and Found if you are missing a jacket or anything else!

I love working with your children, I believe in them and the future looks bright because of them! Thanks for your support of Heritage!

Adam Baker – Principal (adam.baker@washk12.org ~ 435-628-4427)

PS – PTA Box Top Challenge is beginning soon, watch for notes home with more details!

Heritage Holiday Help!

Hello Heritage Roadrunners!

I love this time of year! Helping hands seem to come from everyone as we celebrate this wonderful season! At Heritage we are in full swing with our “Penny Wars” challenge. Students have been bringing in change to help their grade level come out on top! Thanks for your support!

We have another opportunity to share! http://southernutahcares.com/event/stepupstg/ (#StepUpSTG) describes the current community movement to help those in need at this time of year. In short, Spectrum Media has paired up with the Washington County School District to provide much-needed supplies to students and children who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless. This year we are asking the community to help us collect new packages of socks, underwear, scarves, hats and gloves for each of these students. We have a collection bin near the entrance of our school. Please help if you so desire!

I hope that each of us kind find, joy, peace, and happiness during this wonderful time of year!
